ABOUT

PLANT-BASED EQUIVALENTS OF COMMON FOOD ITEMS

We do not endorse any particular products, but we understand that a newbie vegetarian may be looking for equivalents of some common food items which are free of animal products and their associated cholesterol, fat, and carcinogens.  Here is a list of some common pantry items and their plant-based counterparts, with links to sample manufacturers (as available) so you can see what each product looks like as you scan your health-food store aisles:

Eggs - tofu, Energy Egg-replacer, ground flaxseed, bananas, applesauce, or prunes. For details on when to use each and further tips, please see Egg Replacements.

Gelatin - Agar agar powder or flakes

Ice cream - Soy, rice, and sorbet ice creams

Mac and Cheese - Road's End Mac & Chreese

Mayonnaise - Vegenaise, Nayonaise

Meat - mock meats made seitan or soy

Milk (Dairy) - Soy, rice, and almond milks
